ArcGIS on Mac OS X

Filed under: Mac OS X — geoLibro @ 5:01 am

From Christian Spanring: Rather than “go out and play minigolf,” Spanring set up a MacBook to run ArcGIS. I confess I’m a little disappointed I haven’t heard more excitement about this possibility in particular (within the greater cloud of excitement about Windows running on Apple machines), but nonetheless I am personally thrilled to hear this will work. Later this year I hope to receive delivery of my own MacBook Pro and you can be damned sure ArcGIS is going to be one of the first things I try (everything else I know works). I’ve spoken with another ArcGIS user via a listserv and we’re both very hungry for this type of news. I love the ethos of GRASS and I appreciate its power very much, but it just isn’t a fluid experience for people who are new to GIS. It’s a hard sell, to be sure. And using ArcGIS with the benefit of Exposé and the rest of the OS X UI? Swell.

  1. Keep us posted. I am not a Mac fan at all, but at least a handful of times per semester students will request/complain that we do not have ArcGIS installed on any of our Mac computers. Now, my solution has always been just to sack the Macs, but there would then be an angry horde of folks waiting for me in the parking lot. I want to avoid this, so I’m going to talk to some of our Mac people to see how easy and viable it would be to install ArcGIS. Thanks for the tip.

  2. I most certainly will keep up with this. A large part of the GIS community probably share your apathy (or possibly even antipathy) for Macs, but there is a growing share – many of whom come from the Unix/Linux world – that like the Mac usability but wish it could offer certain apps. Since the Mac OS moved to a Unix base, this has been an empty argument except when it came to games, something I care nothing about. Oh, but also for GIS, about which I do care. So this move to the Intel chip, the availability of Base Camp and Parallels (and maybe if WINE keeps progressing) is all very exciting.

If I had more guts I would have asked the Dean of Libraries to purchase all Macs for the library’s lab, but it’s hard to convince non-Mac people to buy Macs (especially at that price). It’s like trying to convert people to another political party.
